Inspired by teaching his own son, Takeshi, Kumon developed a curriculum focused on rote memorization.

Kumon initially grew slowly, only gaining 63, students over its first 16 years. However, in Kumon published a book titled The Secret of Kumon Mathleading to a doubling of its size in the next two years.

Kumon opened their first United States locations in[3] and byKumon reached 1. Kumon soon added more educational subjects, leading them to change their name from Kumon Institute of Mathematics to Kumon Institute of Education.

At this point, the first Kumon Logo was created. InKumon's success lead to an increase in enrollments. It became the first American school to integrate the Kumon Math Method into the regular K—4 mathematics curriculum. As ofKumon had over 26, centres around the globe with over 4 million registered students.

Kumon produced Baby Kumon in Japan ina tutoring program targeted for children between 1—2 years old. Kumon is an independent program, where instructors and assistants tailor instruction for individual students. Each student is given an initial assessment of his or her abilities, called the Kumon Diagnostic Test.

Each test has a range of 20—60 questions. Based on the results and the student's study skills, a Kumon Instructor will create an individualized-study plan. Students commonly begin Kumon at an 'easy starting point' to build study habits, concentration and a strong understanding of the fundamental topics. As students progress, Kumon Instructors plan for students to study at a difficulty level that aims to challenge students so they remain motivated but not so difficult as to discourage them.

The study plan is regularly updated by the Kumon Instructor to match the ability of each student. Students advance to the next level after they complete a mastery test based on speed and accuracy. Students do not pass or fail the mastery test, but are given chances to practice and retake the exam until they have demonstrated a sound understanding of the material. All Kumon programs are pencil and worksheet based. The worksheets increase in difficulty in small increments.

It is recommended that students study for 15—30 minutes for five days of the week with the other two study days being completed when students visit their local Kumon Center. All Kumon Instructors are qualified and trained in the teaching of the Kumon method and are supported by Kumon office staff.

Kumon Assistants are trained by Kumon Instructors. As a high school mathematics teacher, Mr. Kumon understood that an understanding of calculus was essential for Japanese university entrance exams so in writing worksheets for his son, Mr.

Kumon focused on all the topics needed for a strong understanding of calculus starting from the basics of counting. Kumon students do not use calculators and solve all problems using mental calculation.

Kumon tutoring is in a group of 6 students to one tutor. The Kumon Native Language Programs are designed to expose students to a broad range of texts and develop the skill of reading comprehension. A number of Kumon Centres also use audio CDs to help students with pronunciation.

Note: Levels vary slightly by country [10] Kumon is also beginning to develop non-Native language programs more extensively. For example, in Spain, Mexico, and the South American countries that have Kumon Math programs, they will be adding English as a second language over the coming year.Students count up to 10 pictures and dots individually and as a group.

Mastery is gradual and the eventual goal is for students to be able to say the total number of objects in each group without counting. Students count up to 30 using pictures and numbers. Gradually, students learn to recognize groups of up to 20 dots without counting them individually.

Students learn to use a pencil through line tracing exercises, beginning with short lines and advancing to long curved lines. The curved lines gradually take the shape of large numbers.

This develops the fine motor skills needed to trace and write numbers independently and teaches the natural stroke order required for number formation. Students also develop their concentration ability and learn to recite numbers up to Students learn to write numbers up to Students deepen their understanding of the number sequence through writing consecutive numbers and filling in the blanks in number tables, number boards, and complete-the-sequence problems.

By the end of the level, students learn to read up to Students continue to enhance their understanding of the sequence of numbers as well as the number-writing skills that they developed in Level 4A. Students are introduced to addition in Level 3A. In this level, students further develop basic mental calculation skills in addition through a sequential study of adding 4 through adding It is very important that students master the contents of this level for smooth progress in subsequent levels.

Level 2A aims to develop the concentration ability and work skills necessary for Level A. Level A continues horizontal addition with larger numbers. Mastering addition ensures a smooth introduction to subtraction in this level. This level aims to develop mental calculations, while strengthening students concentration ability and their work skills. This level teaches vertical addition and subtraction. Throughout it, students will encounter their first word problems in Kumon. This level draws on the advanced mental calculation skills learned in previous levels when students carry in addition questions and borrow in questions involving subtraction.

Students master the multiplication tables by practicing until they can answer immediately. Next, students learn up to 4-digit by 1-digit multiplication with mental carryovers. Once multiplication is mastered, simple division by 1-digit is introduced. Students who have developed good mental calculation ability will not have to write division steps.

Students learn double digit multiplication before advancing to long division. In this challenging section, students develop estimation skills that will be necessary for future fraction work. Once students ability to work with all 4 arithmetic operations is confirmed, they begin to study fractions, learning to reduce using the Greatest Common Factor.Kumon English aims to develop solid reading comprehension skills in students.

With this skill, students can read even complicated passages quickly and accurately, and grasp their meanings with ease. Mr Toru Kumon himself said that his intention was to develop students to be able to pick up any book and read it with deep understanding. Every level consists of worksheets, which is broken down into topics. In this block, students learn the basic sounds of English words phonics. By mastering these levels, students will be able to read effectively.

The basics of grammar are covered in this level.

If students do not listen to the CD and look at the words, they will not hear the pronunciation or how they are used. From listening to the CD and the reading, the child can also identify which words he does not understand and find out the meanings BEFORE starting his exercise. Also make sure he reads the passages thoroughly before trying to answer the questions. Daily study routine To effectively develop self-learning skills, students must be taught in the early stages to observe a study routine.

Daily study also ensures that students get regular daily exposure to English, whcih helps them pick up the language more effectively. Students must follow this procedure to get the full benefits of Kumon English.

Do not allow your child to take short cuts. Otherwise, they will eventually be stuck and unable to learn anything more!Kumon is a mathematics and reading-based learning franchise that started in Japan and has now expanded worldwide. But how well do real parents say it actually works in practice?

But strong math skills can be the foundation for advanced degrees and engineering and science, and can set your child up for a better and more productive future. Giving them additional lessons sounds like a smart choice. The Hype Any time a franchise reaches the level of success that Kumon has, there will always be some hype that comes along with it. The mere fact that this is practiced in multiple countries in various forms speaks volumes about the sort of results parents must be seeing.

Kumon Math Levels

The Cost The cost has often been justified as being more expensive than teaching your children on your own, and less expensive than a private tutor giving one-on-one lessons. But like with most activities your child takes part in, the more you involve yourself in it, the better it will be for them.

Reading programs that rely on memorizing words have come under some scrutiny in the United States as well, with programs like Your Baby Can Read. You also have to remember that some parents will want the sort of drills and repetition and feel that this is what their child needs in order to learn to focus, while others will see it as turning their child into an automaton.

Since parenting and teaching styles vary so wildly, the only real way to know if this is something that will work for your child, and get your seal of approval is to give it a try and see how they respond to it. It might be possible to sit in on a class, or have your child use the workbooks before enrolling them to give it a trial run before signing on completely.

The American education system lags behind in the global economy, especially when it comes to math, and this is mostly due to other cultures putting more emphasis on early education and expecting more out of their children when it comes to academic performance.

I sent my child at the center for English Reading. The program was good for him initially but in just less than a year, it became too difficult for him to continue. At the center there are inexperienced teaching staff. When the child is struggling with understanding concepts this is not explained to them. The solution offered by the staff is to get the student to repeat the same material over and over again without understanding the concepts taught.

The Kumon solution is simply, to repeat the material multiple times. The child hates doing the same material over and over again.

KUMON L Level Worksheet

The staff will also make a student repeat the material if they take more than the allocated time to complete each book. My child took much longer to do the material than the allocated time, as he hated doing the work and spent most of the time complaining about having to do the material.

He is also a very slow writer. Kumon does not take any of these factors into account. It assumes that if a child takes longer than what they determine is acceptable then, the child needs to repeat the material.

When the child repeats the material, they remember the answers not how to determine the answers.

Does Kumon Really Work?

The early levels 7A to 2A inclusive tests did not assess his spelling of basic words. They started testing spelling at A1 level. I noticed that even though my child moved on to higher level, he still did not know how to spell basic words. Kumon assumes that the child will learn how to spell basic words in earlier levels which is wrong.

At A1 level and beyond, the child is expected to learn how to spell about words which is excessive in addition to the concepts taught at each level. In the material there are no strategies explaining to the child how to answer comprehension questions.

The Kumon material also does not explain concepts well or often, provides no explanation at all. Kumon books which can be purchased from retailers explains concepts far better than the course material. In some levels there is too much for the child to learn in one level. If the child fails, they are given the same test to do. The child passes the second time, simply because they know the answers to the test not because they have learnt the concepts in the level tested.

But Kumon does this to make parents believe the program is working for their child. Significant improvements need to be made to the Kumon material and the method of teaching.

My recommendation is if you want to try the program, try it for no more than 8 months and then switch to another course or use the Kumon books instead, which can be purchased online. It is divided into five learning blocks: the word building block, the sentence building block, the paragraph development block, the summary block, and the critical reading block. Each block has an overall learning goal and builds the necessary foundation for the next learning block.

The aim of the Kumon Reading program is to develop students' reading comprehension abilities to a point where they will easily be able to read, understand, summarize and analyze advanced forms of writing from a diversity of fields. Though the main focus of the program is the development of reading comprehension skills, grammar lessons are also incorporated. Comprehension questions then follow the reading selections. Good writing and speaking skills are fostered as a natural outgrowth of the Kumon Reading curriculum.

The program begins with simple letter recognition, phonics and vocabulary development and moves into a study of grammar and sentence structure. This is followed by exercises in organizing information, paragraph structure, passage analysis and ultimately summary writing and critical analysis. Students begin at a comfortable starting point with work that can be easily completed. This way they master the basics and gain complete proficiency with each successive step.

Students typically attend the center twice a week. Worksheets are assigned daily and repeated until mastered. The daily assignments are key to the Kumon method, ensuring optimal comprehension and retention of concepts as well as establishing a strong foundation for more advanced material.

Every student advances at a comfortable pace which is dictated by the student's ability and initiative. The first priority of the Kumon instructor is to enable each child to perform and progress to her full potential. Each Level consists of pages and is broken down by topic into sections. The sections are likewise broken into sets of 10 pages. Unlike the Math Program, levels in the Reading Program are grouped together into Blocks, each block dealing with a certain aspect of reading instruction.
